Senate Votes to Sell MOHELA Assets Paving the Way for
Human Cloning and Life-Destroyinig Research
“Missouri Right to Life is profoundly disappointed at the passage of SB
389 and
HB 16. SB 389 creates the Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative which
is where the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) assets will
be directed.
HB 16 is the supplemental appropriations bill that lines out how the MOHELA
assets, through the Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative, will be used by
the state. These bills together will allow state institutions to spend
public money for facilities and programs that will destroy human life through
cloning and embryonic stem cell research," said Pam Fichter, state president.
One major goal of the infusion of MOHELA funds is to expand the infrastructure
available for biological science programs, which may well include embryonic
stem cell research unless prohibited. “Unfortunately, it is
not possible to enact pro-life restrictions since the adoption of Amendment
2. Even if it were possible, the provisions of MOHELA, the contracts,
resolution and the restrictions of HB 16 are plainly insufficient to restrict
unethical, life-destroying research from being facilitated and performed
using MOHELA money. Missouri citizens should take note of this giant giveaway
of government funding to an industry that consistently denied seeking such
funding in their support of Amendment 2,” continued Fichter.
